This is How I Read a Book

growth tools

Today I’m going to teach you how I read and consume a book. You know, it’s not enough to read a book, you need to consume it. I’ll show you what I mean by that.

I use a Kindle. Now, I know there are book purists out there that will say, No, no, no, I need a physical copy. I’m the same way, I totally understand it. And yet digital books have an advantage that physical copies don’t. I’m going to walk you through that. I use the Kindle Paperwhite. The reason for this is because it’s not it doesn’t have a ton of technology on it. There are no apps. It’s not like a mini iPad. And so because of that, I only use it for reading, no games, nothing else. This is my all time favorite version of Kindle.

I also like that I can highlight with my finger. One thing that a lot of people don’t know about Kindles is that all of your highlights actually go to one link. In fact, I bookmark this link in Chrome, because I’m constantly referencing it. I’ll put the link down below so that you can click on that and ultimately log in. If you already have Kindle books, you can find your highlights there.

I’m going to show you this with one of the books I’ve read recently, it’s called Awareness Conversations with Masters. What happens is, all the highlights are going to come in, so what I do is, once the book is done, I go in and copy it and then I paste it into a Google Doc. When you do this, you are going to get these right here, orange, highlight page seven, I asked my virtual assistant, my cyber backer, Daren, she goes in and actually takes all of the that out of these documents. Now, what happens now is I’ve got all of the highlights in one place, and I want to go through the best of the best, I want to find the things in this book that really resonated with me, I’m still working through this one, it takes me about a week to get through all the highlights, because as you can see, these are really long documents. This one’s 17 pages.

I have a course called My Freed Life. It’s kind of my life work. And it’s something that I’m always seeking to improve. When I read books, I find a little improvements, stories or anecdotes that can help me with that course. So one of the other cool features is if you hit Command F, you can search the document, and I’ve created a little code. It’s M, F, L, Like My Freed Life. So what happens is, as I work through this, if I come across something that needs to be added to the course, or maybe something that needs to replace something in the course, I type in F L next to it. Then I can go in and I search that.

So what this does is it makes the consumption the learning process of books so much more intentional, it makes it more educational. And it’s really simple. If you have the right technology, again, it’s having a Kindle, you can highlight with your fingers, all of your highlights are going to go to one spot, copy and paste them out, remove the orange highlight page seven stuff, then you’re gonna go through and ultimately, highlight or bold, the best of the best highlights from it. And anything that you’re looking to reference later, create a little coding system and you can search for that right there.

I trust that you’ll check this out do it with just one book. See if your your education or the learning process through that book isn’t stronger than other ones, and let me know what you find out.

Thank you for watching.
